Project Description:
Our research about Eugene and case studies from phase 1, led us to identify the problem. We noticed that there was a lack of affordable studio spaces for creators, chefs, and artists. The location of our site offers a perfect opportunity to create a co-living and workspace space for Artists, Creators, and Chefs who are vendors at the Saturday Market in downtown Eugene. We envision an environment that is social, engaging and facilitates collaboration and inspires curiosity.
The first floor of the building is a forum for the public to engage with the residents and their art, consisting of spaces such as multipurpose event room, classroom, demonstration kitchen, maker space and meeting spaces. Two large atriums serve as a source of light, while also facilitating a visual connection between the public spaces and private residential floors. The upper four floors are private, consisting of shared studios and apartment spaces as well as communal spaces such as lounges and communal kitchens. Our building provides different layouts such as studios, one bedroom, and two-bedroom apartments.
Our design uses the steam plant’s existing structure as a shell, infilled with a mass timber structure; With the exception of the replacement of the roof, the addition of two sunken patios and the addition of entrances on the ground level. Our construction materials intend to complement the existing conditions, continuing the use of concrete and steel in contrast to the new timber structure. The interior scheme revolves around fixed and flexible elements. For example, integrated storage on many scales throughout the building, including storage cores for equipment storage in large spaces and built-in amenities in units. The flexible elements include modular furniture in all public and communal spaces, folding doors to easily open spaces, and curtains to enclose space for privacy. Our intent is to create a dynamic environment which supports users’ ability to manipulate space according to their needs.
