Alexandre Desplat is a composer, his career has focused on the production of cinematic soundtracks. He was born in Paris with a Greek mother and French father; therefore he scored many movies for French and European directors before beginning to enter the American industry; his ‘breakout’ was the soundtrack for The Girl with a Pearl Earring. He is a very passionate, dedicated artist, not only did he meet his wife, a violinist and muse, in the production of a score; He also stated in an interview for Turner Classic Movies he states that his typical day lasts from 6:30am to 12:00am. Additionally in article for Screen Daily, he states that “‘I love to work a lot, and to work fast,’ he says, suggesting it is the nature of the collaboration that is more important…” (Screen Daily) He also stresses the importance of collaboration with directors and filmmakers in his work, he feels it is necessary to have a deep understanding of the film and the filmmakers intentions to successfully score said movie. Also, he speaks of the combination of real and electronic music in his work. He frequently works with symphonies, orchestras, etc., but he also uses electronic sounds and digital programs to create sounds that could not otherwise be made. Lastly, he accredits his success to being able to synch the music to the dialogue or to the rhythm of the visuals of the film.

Color Concept:

Aesthetic inspiration from long term collaborator Wes Anderson, informing color palette. Color blocking used to enforce visual separation of spaces.

Concept Statement:

This studio space will be focused mainly on the electronic production and editing of music, although the space will also accommodate instruments. Making sure that the space efficiently houses all of the technology and tools that he needs is vital to creating the idea studio for him. Another aspect that is important to Desplat’s process is being able to sync the composition of the music to the movies therefore the space will include convenient screens to play the films. Additionally, considering Desplat’s description of his process, the space will also include a seating area that is intended for meetings with filmmakers and other collaborators. Lastly, the space will be a colorful environment since Desplat has referenced the connection between color and his compositions.
